HYBRID PARK SHELTER

Design Studio I – Fall 2020

Project Description

Building upon the sweeping entrance to Commons Park, this pavilion’s gradual transformations on a simple base form act as a semi-permeable intervention in a busy park. Public concerns over safety in the park created a unique set of challenges to ensure a robust construction and provide clear lines of sight.

Taking inspiration from the studio Zospeum and their work with fiber optic cables embedded in concrete castings, the back panels of the alcoves allow private spaces to show occupancy. By effectively changing the opacity of such a visually heavy material, new interactions emerge between visitors as you may catch glimpses of shadow interactions without ever seeing their face
