MOVING GARDEN

Design Studio V – Fall 2022 – Built

Motivated by the ongoing climate crisis and our role as a species in the Anthropocene, this pavilion is an exquisite corpse of three sections, head, torso, and feet, which bring forth different questions relating to interspecies collaboration, resource usage, and habits which continue to impact our society.

HEAD: Concerned with the collection of water (or the lack of it) and engaging visitors in an audio-visual experience during the rare rain storm which will distribute water to the plants below. The different panel sizes and shapes create varied sounds as rain falls, echoing memories of rainstorms on a back porch

TORSO: Concerned with the interaction between different species in an urban environment, visitors were encouraged to adopt a plant from a row of hanging bottle planters. The combination of returning visitors to take care of the garden, as well as natural inhabitants such as squirrels, birds, and other species, form the heart of the garden

FEET: Anchoring the garden to the ground with a unique gabion system, this section focused on the human experience, creating a ballast point for the entire structure as well as an engaging space to experience all three sections

This was a design-build project led by Jose Ibarra, I was a part of the head group and responsible for experiential perspectives in addition to contributions to overall design and construction
